Identifying A SV

What IS an SV?

The best way to identify the SV is by reading the standard. In general, this is a medium sized dog, from 25 -35 lbs. The head is a wedge-shape. The expression is alert, friendly and fox-like. The proportion of height to length of body, as measured from sternum to the end of the buttocks, should be 2:3.

–The Coat is close fitting and coarse and is of medium length.
–The Tail may be natural (long, stub, bob) or docked.
–The Color is Sable (black at the tip of the hairs), wolf colors in all shades
of gray and red and some yellow/cream.
–Some SV’s are very dark (both grays and reds) all over their bodies.
There may be a white blaze on the head or neck or chest and their may be
lighter colors on the feet and underside of the dog.
–The SV has harness markings on the neck and shoulders and has a facial
mask. The mask may be hard to see if the dog is very dark or light colored.

–There are occasional cream or white SV’s and also fluffies (very loose,
open coat).
–The ears are pricked and very alert and mobile
–The muzzle is square and slightly shorter than the skull.

The SV is an alert, energetic dog with a sweet temperament. The SV loves to be with children as well as adults. Usually they get along well with other animals.

What the SV is NOT........

  • The SV is NOT a miniature Shepherd or an Elkhound….no matter that the ears or face may look similar. Also, Shepherd’s muzzles are longer.
  • The SV is NOT a 40lb and up dog (unless overweight) …no matter the resemblance.
  • The SV does NOT have Corgi ears (not as wide set on the side or as wide as a corgi’s)
  • The SV is NOT as low to the ground or as wide or long as a Corgi.
